Medical Device & Syringe Printing Processes

Pad printing on medical devices and syringes

Pad printing is the best option for printing on medical devices and syringes. It is used to transfer a 2-dimensional image – such as company logos, labels, and measurements – on medical housing devices and syringes. Pad printing on medical housing devices and components uses a silicone pad to transfer the image onto the item. It offers extremely fine detail and tight multicolor registration – a necessity for medical devices and syringes.

Screen Printing on Medical Devices & Syringes

Screen printing can be used on many different types of medical devices, but it is most popular on syringes. Syringe screen printing allows the transfer of large opaque images onto cylindrical plastic or glass syringes. In this process, a screen made of very fine mesh is used to apply the ink.

Hot Stamping Medical Devices & Syringes

Hot stamping is a dry process that uses heat and pressure to transfer reflective metallic foil or high-gloss opaque foil to a medical device or syringe. It can also be used to decorate raised areas like letters.

Medical Device and Syringe Quality Assurance

At Unique Assembly and Decorating, we know incorrect printing on medical devices and syringes can have serious consequences. So, we follow detailed standard operating procedures to maintain the highest level of process control, overall organization and white room cleanliness to ensure the integrity of each medical device printing project. As a 9001:2000 ISO-certified company, Unique Assembly and Decorating uses specific procedures to ensure quality control, including ink adhesion testing, print color matching and certificates of conformances.

Before any printing on medical devices or syringes can occur, Unique Assembly and Decorating must first identify the appropriate medical grade ink for the project. At Unique we offer medical class VI complaint inks made specifically for medical devices and syringes. To be qualified as medical grade, inks must go through many tests prescribed by the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention to ensure that they are fit for human contact. These tests include an acute systemic toxicity test, intracutaneous test and implantation test.

We evaluate each project to make sure we accomplish permanent adhesion which is required in the medical device and syringe industry. Ink adhesion – the attachment process of ink to the surface of rigid material – is important for medical devices and syringes. To accomplish great ink adhesion, sometimes surface treatment is required.

A cleanroom environment is essential to ensure the safety of the product as well as freedom from contaminants and harmful chemicals or debris. We use a controlled environment white room for screen printing, hot stamping, and pad printing medical devices. The floor and walls are sealed and painted, high tact mats are located at entrances and no corrugated boxes or materials are allowed inside the room. Traffic inside the room is limited to necessary operators, supervisors, and quality control personnel only. The people inside the room wear Tyvex coats, hair nets, beard covers and rubber gloves at all times. These measures ensure that a cleanroom is maintained to complete the printing process.

Unique Assembly and Decorating follow strict FDA specifications and certification timelines. We work within ISO 13485 requirements as well as all applicable FDA and EU regulations.

The placement of identification markings on syringes must be extremely precise. A syringe printing inspection is required to verify that the orienting is in the correct place on the syringe barrel and that there are no smears, gaps, or blots.

In addition, we follow detailed standard operating procedures to maintain the room's cleanliness, to create work area separation and to perform line clearances to ensure the separation and integrity of each medical device printing project. Lastly, Unique works closely with each customer to develop a specific SQP (supplier quality plan) that outlines the step-by-step procedures for receiving, setting up the pad printing, hot stamping or screen printing process, in-process inspection, and final inspection for each medical device printing project. This detailed quality plan ensures that these hot stamped, screen printed, or pad printed medical devices will meet or exceed the quality standards of each project.
